  • Article - Make 1 Liter
  • MATERIALS REQUIRED

    * 1 liter WVO (waste veg oil)
    * 10 - 20 gr KOH (Potassium Hydroxide) or NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide)
    * 220 ml Methanol

    EQUIPMENT NEEDED

    * 1x - 2 liter seal-able container
    * 1x - measuring cup to measure out 220ml methanol
    * 1x - scale to measure KOH or NaOH
    * 1x - seal-able container to mix methoxide.
    * 1x - funnel

    THE TECHNIQUE OIL PREPERATION

    * Filter WVO to remove junk and any solids.
    * Heat WVO to 55deg C

    MAKING THE METHOXIDE

    * Do titration test for additional catalyst amount to use See: "Titration Test" for details

    IF USING KOH: * Mix 220ml methanol and 7gr KOH + titration test amount to make methoxide. IF USING NaOH * Mix 220ml methanol and 5gr NaOH + titration test amount to make methoxide

    * Stir or swirl to dissolve all, make sure it is completely dissolved.

    NOTE: NaOH / KOH see "Adjust for Purity" article

    MAKING THE BIO-DIESEL!

    * Make sure WVO is about 55 deg C, using funnel pour into 2 liter container.
    * Using same funnel slowly pour in methoxide mixture, replace container lid securely
    * Shake the bottle hard for ten seconds
    * Place the bottle on flat surface, observe the colour change, from light brown to dark brown.
    * After 10 minutes the glycerin will start to settle and form a layer on the bottom
    * After one hour, most of the glycerin will have settled
    * You should now see a 2 distinctive layers, top is bio-diesel, bottom is glycerin.
    * Bio-diesel will still be very cloudy and will take a day or more for it to clear

    End of process, you know have unwashed Bio-Diesel

    Proceed to "Wash 1 Liter" batch of bio-diesel
